Najvažnije europske vrijednosti poput demokracije, ljudskih prava i pravne države dugo su vrijedile kao univerzalni ciljevi humanističkog i naprednog razvitka čovječanstva, te su vrijednosti zadnjih godina pod velikim pritiskom. Moramo li zbog polarizirajućih svjetskih političkih promjena i demografskog razvitka zbog kojega će 2050 godine Europljani činiti svega šest posto svjetske populacije, krenuti u temeljito propitivanje naših glavnih europskih vrijednosti. Možemo li ih sačuvati u Europi ili ih je potrebno nanovo smišljati? Koje obrazovne snage i ideje postoje i na koji način Europa može ostati zajedno i u 21. stoljeću te zadržati svoje temeljne vrijednosti poput slobode, demokracije i solidarnosti. Nizom događanja Zaklada Friedrich-Ebert i Goethe-Institut Kroatien u Zagreb dovode vrhunske mislioce koji će se u svjetlu najvažnijih debata i centralnih izazova baviti budućnošću Europe i pozvati ih na razgovor s vama.

Kada razmišljam o Europi, nužno moram pomisliti na priču o mojem ocu i trenutak kada smo prelazili granicu Slovenije i Italije. Vozili smo se iz jedne zemlje u drugu kao da idemo na izlet u okolicu Berlina. Moj je otac kao mladić bio u opasnosti jer je prelazio granicu koja 50 godina kasnija više nije postojala. Kada me netko pita što je za mene Europa, odgovaram da je upravo to: sloboda. I način na koji treba živjeti slobodu trebalo bi živjeti i Europu.
Nicol Ljubić rođen je 1971. godine u Zagrebu. Odrastao je kao sin aviotehničara u Grčkoj, Švedskoj, Rusiji i Njemačkoj. Studirao je politologiju u Bremenu i završio školu Henri-Nannen u Hamburgu. Radi kao slobodni autor. Višestruko je nagrađivan za svoje reportaže i knjige, između ostaloga nagradom Theodor-Wolff-Preis, nagradom Adalbert von Chamisso i književnom nagradom ver.di. Do sada je objavio sedam knjiga, uključujući romane i stručne knjige. Tijekom 2014. i 2016. zajedno s Mely Kiyak, Antje Ravic Strubel, Tilmanom Spenglerom i Frankom-Walterom Steinmeierom bio je pokretač Europske konferencije pisaca.
