Round Table on Multilateral Climate Negotiations

Within the circle of partners with whom we cooperate in the field of socio-ecological transformation, we organized a round table on the current state of international climate negotiations.

The discussion, which was held in our office, was opened by Ivan Güttler, Director General of the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ), who set the context by speaking about climate trends, forecasts, early warnings, and about the role and importance of DHMZ in Croatia.

After him, the discussion was continued by Thomas Hirsch, Director of the network Climate & Development Advice, an international organization of consultants specialized in climate protection and development policy.

In his presentation titled Current status and future perspectives of international climate policies and European best practices, ahead of the upcoming COP conference in Belém, Mr. Hirsch emphasized that the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is not perfect, but it is the only format of climate negotiations in which all stakeholders participate. As such, it must continue to exist – albeit in a simpler form. He also noted that other formats would not be successful without the political will of the very same actors who are currently involved in the UNFCCC.

Thomas Hirsch is the author of numerous publications for FES, and his most recent one is titled Why a human rights-based approach to climate mobility matters and is available here: link.

We thank all participants for coming and for the valuable exchange!
