Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung

Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES)

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung or Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) is the oldest political foundation in Germany. It is named after the first democratically elected President of Germany, Friedrich Ebert. The work of our political foundation is focused on the core ideas and values of social democracy: freedom, justice, and solidarity. As a non-profit organization, we operate independently and aim to encourage dialogue within the society about important political challenges.

We support and strengthen social democracy primarily through:

  • work on political education with the goal of strengthening civil society
  • political consulting
  • international cooperation through our network of offices in over 100 countries
  • encouraging talented young people
  • preserving the history of social democracy through archives and libraries

Friedrich Ebert (1871-1925)

Friedrich Ebert was the first president of the Weimar Republic from 1919 to 1925. He advocated for the construction of a parliamentary democracy. He considered himself as the president of all Germans, and pursued a policy aimed at achieving social balance and compromise. In his will, he stipulated that all donations from his funeral should be used for the establishment of the foundation. Since then, the fight against the discrimination of workers in education has become the main goal of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.
