We advocate for a democratic, socially just, and environmentally sustainable society in Croatia and Slovenia. We collaborate with progressive forces – primarily trade unions, politicians, and non-governmental organizations. We organize conferences and seminars, offer political education and advice, as well as promote experience exchange and networking on national, regional, and international levels.
We promote citizen’s political participation together with our partners from the world of politics, science, and civil society. We do so through innovative event formats to tackle the danger of growing political apathy. Through public events and journalistic activities, we encourage public debate and draw attention to the decline of the rule of law. Young people are especially important to us. Through political education, we strengthen their ability to act for the future. Networking politicians, civil society, and scientists is particularly important to us for a stable democracy at the heart of Europe.
Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung supports trade unions in Croatia and Slovenia to continue representing the interests of workers effectively in the 21st century. FES supports its trade union partners in taking on socio-political responsibility and finding solutions to new challenges and changes in the labor market. By strengthening trade unions, FES contributes to promoting social justice and solidarity in Croatia, Slovenia, and beyond. Cooperation takes place on various levels, such as providing expertise, training programs, and international networking.
The consequences of the climate crisis have become a part of our reality. FES supports projects that provide answers to ecological and social issues simultaneously. We advocate for a sustainable economy with zero net emissions and a socially inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity for a good life. To achieve these goals, we actively participate in networking with environmental NGOs, progressive politicians, and trade unions, all of which will contribute to a better and more just future. At the same time, we deliver policy recommendations into the public discourse based on the results of studies and conferences, as well as examples of best practices.
After joining the European Union, the international position of Croatia and Slovenia has significantly changed. The goal of FES is to support both countries in taking an active and constructive role in foreign and European policy. This particularly applies to the EU enlargement process to the Western Balkan countries. To this end, FES collaborates with progressive forces from all socially relevant areas (policy makers, think tanks, academia, and civil society). The region's past, marked by conflicts, continues to influence intergovernmental relations in Southeastern Europe. FES primarily supports NGOs that promote constructive dealing with the past and highlights measures that contribute to peacebuilding in their work—whether historical (such as the peaceful reintegration of the Danube River region) or current.
